What Should I Buy for College

Beginning college can be both a challenging and nerve-wracking experience, and one of the stops that you can take to make things easier for yourself is to make sure that you buy the best things that you can for college so that you are organised and have everything ready to go when you start college. To make this easier for you, we have created a list of what you will need and some advice on what to look for with each item.

A good backpack is one of the most important items that you can buy for college, as many people underestimate the sheer volume of things that you have to carry around, whether it is big heavy textbooks, a laptop or sports gear.  Buying the best backpack for college is important to prevent yourself from getting back injuries and making sure that you can carry everything that you need, check out Backpack Reviewer for a great list of backpacks for college.

Pens & Pencils

When you are at college, you will be writing lots of notes, so it is important to buy pens and pencils that are not just cheap, but also comfortable. If you visit a stationary shop, you can often try out a few pens and pencils before you buy. This can save a lot of discomfort later on.

If you are like me and prefer to make notes by hand rather than on a laptop, then buying a decent notebook is a must. We recommend buying one that has a hardcover to keep your notes for becoming damaged in your backpack. If you can afford it, Moleskine make the best notebooks.

As the most expensive thing on this list, a laptop is something that you should think carefully about before buying to make sure that it fits your needs. Some people will require portability more than power, so a laptop like Apple’s Macbook would be ideal. Whereas if you are studying computer science then you will need something more powerful for doing things like compiling code.

I have been using highlighters since I was very young for studying and they never seem to become less useful. They are ideal for highlighting the most important points in your textbooks or notes .

This is not necessary for everyone, especially if you prefer using apps like Google Calendar for planning, but sometimes it can be nice to have a hard copy of your plans, whether for your class schedule or revision.

USB Flash Drive

With modern file sharing software, such as Dropbox, these are not as important as they used to be. However, they are very useful for transferring larger projects (as often off-campus internet connections are slow) and making backups of your work.
